Concrete is one of the world's most important materials. But making the cement that binds it generates about 8% of anthropogenic carbon-dioxide emissions.

One alternative, literally as well as metaphorically green, is to recruit the services of chlorophyll-laden, photosynthesizing organisms called cyanobacteria.

Another biocement firm feeds its bacteria organic nutrients, in the form of sugar and amino acids, as well as inorganic ones. Its product is better at binding fine particles together than conventional cement.
